Android Jumps RIM in Latest Smartphone Market Share Numbers, Now Tops U.S. Charts

ComScore released its 3-month rolling smartphone platform numbers today for a period of January-March 2011 and showed some pretty daunting numbers for the folks over at RIM.  After ending December 2010 with 31.6% of the mobile smartphone market share in the U.S. and the overall lead, they have now dropped some 4.5% into second while Android toppled it by jumping another 6% to hold 34.7% of the overall share.  Apple gained an extra 0.5% and will surely surpass it by within the next 3 months leaving the U.S. smartphone battle with really just 2 leaders.  The Android platform will continue to skyrocket, but we also know that Apple and it’s iOS products aren’t going anywhere any time soon.  Talk about the free fall of the century here from RIM…yikes.

Some other cool stats from their new report:

• 72.5 million people now own smartphones; up 15% since December.
• Only 25.7% of mobile users claim to play games with their device.
• 234 million Americans own mobile phones.
