YouTube introduced student pricing for YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium this week, offering students an opportunity to lock in a $5.99/month price for the service, down from the usual $11.99/month price.
We covered this after YouTube renamed YouTube Red to YouTube Premium and split its services into YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium, but to recap, YouTube Premium is an ad-free YouTube experience, plus YouTube Music Premium. YouTube Music Premium focuses more on ad-free music and background playback, but can be purchased separate from YouTube Premium for $9.99/month. Even after all of the work Google has done, its plans are pretty confusing, but if you want the most bang for your buck, get YouTube Premium.
Now, for this student pricing, YouTube is offering YouTube Premium for $6.99/month or just YouTube Music Premium for $4.99/month. However, if you sign-up before January 31, 2019, you’ll lock in a price of $5.99/month for YouTube Premium, which yes, includes YouTube Music Premium.
Here is the fine print with regard to who is eligible.
In order to sign up for you a YouTube student membership you must:
- Be enrolled as a full-time student at a United States Title IV accredited college or university. Student plan memberships are not currently offered in any other location.
- Be verified as a student by SheerID.
If you meet all the eligibility requirements for a membership, you will be eligible for up to four years of student membership. You will be required to re-verify your eligibility every year.
