Popular video doorbell and home security camera maker, Ring, has been acquired by Amazon. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but reports are already suggesting it was worth more than $1 billion.
In a statement delivered to GeekWire, a Ring spokesperson said, “We’ll be able to achieve even more by partnering with an inventive, customer-centric company like Amazon. We look forward to being a part of the Amazon team as we work toward our vision for safer neighborhoods.”
Additionally Amazon said that “Ring’s home security products and services have delighted customers since day one,” and that they are “excited to work with this talented team and help them in their mission to keep homes safe and secure.”
Does this mean that Ring is going away? If you read those two statements, it certainly doesn’t sound like it. If anything, Ring will now just have more resources to get their products to even more households. GeekWire suggests that Amazon may run Ring like it does Twitch and Zappos, where they’ll integrate services while letting Ring sort of do its own thing, under its own brand.
As a Ring product user, I don’t have much of a reaction to this, other than that I hope it only helps Ring continue to improve its products. They’ve come a long way from their first couple of poorly made doorbells. I currently have a Ring Doorbell Pro and it’s pretty great. Not only does it give me feeds and history for a cheap price, it has this cool “Neighborhood” section, where you can share videos captured by your Ring products or report crimes with those who live nearby.
And remember, Ring just announced a ton of new stuff that will help turn them into your ultimate smart home security platform. I’d imagine Amazon took notice long ago and probably made a smart play here.
