In May of last year, Verizon’s CEO mentioned the possibility of the carrier launching an OTT (over the top) content service. At CES last week, more details were revealed regarding this service, which would have Big Red entering the arena against the likes of Amazon, Netflix, and Hulu.

For the content service, TechCrunch’s source states Verizon would offer channels, with each channel hosting marquee content. For example, a sports channel could feature NFL content, thanks to Verizon’s $1.5 billion deal to host such things. Other channels would be for news, entertainment, etc.

Whatever this potential service is to be called, it would be distinct from Verizon’s go90 service, which is a free content streaming platform with ads. It is unknown at this time whether a Verizon OTT offering would be free or utilize a paid subscription model (à la Amazon and Netflix).

While we await more official details from Verizon, another tidbit of info inside this report claims the carrier is readying a connected home product (a hub, basically), one that can control a user’s house lights, thermostats, and alarm systems.

Verizon doesn’t necessarily have a time of year when they make large announcements (CES would’ve been a great time), so we’re playing everything by ear at the moment. As more developments occur, we’ll keep you posted.
