iFixit is back at it, this time with a teardown for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ from Samsung.
With these teardowns, iFixit applies a numerical value to how easy or hard something is to self repair. Not everyone relies on the dude at the mall kiosk to fix their phone, so having this information is valuable to the tinkerers among us.
With the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, the scores are in. After prying the front and back glass off, diving into the boards and discovering many parts of the devices are modular, the devices both score a solid 4 out of 10. Is that good, though? Well, considering the Galaxy S7 scored a 3 last year, there has been a bit of improvement. Can’t argue with that.
As iFixit explains, since the glass is curved the way it is, removal without damage is essentially impossible on the S8 and S8+. That means, if there’s a piece you need to replace that is behind the glass and inside the phone, your best bet is to ship it off to Samsung for repair. Tinkerers, I’m sorry.
