According to Instagram, users miss an average of 70% of their photo/video feeds. Sure, if you follow 1K+ people, that’s likely, but why are you following so many people in the first place? How is that a meaningful experience? Apparently that doesn’t matter to Instagram, and starting today, as the company announced in March, a new algorithm is rolling out to everyone’s feeds, bringing the most popular posts directly to the top of your feed. FML. FML!
“Over the past few months, we brought this new way of ordering posts to a portion of the community, and we found that people are liking photos more, commenting more and generally engaging with the community in a more active way,” Instagram states. To help get users more involved with those who post photos and videos, such as bands and brands you follow, their photos will show up more often near the top.
Furthermore, Instagram claims, “No matter how many accounts you follow, you should see your best friend’s latest posts.” How do they do that? Algorithms! Depending on how much you interact with any given user on IG, the algorithm will determine if you are “best friends,” which will surely go well.
Quickly, run to change.org and start a petition to turn it back! The fate of Instagram may be in your hands. Even better, head to Instagram’s Help site, then where you see the frowny face, tap on that. Once frowny has been selected, hit “I don’t like how this works.” Maybe IG will see a direct hit on that topic and begin to rethink this awful idea. You never know, it could work.
