To begin battle over the live social video streaming market, Twitter introduced Periscope this morning, a rival to the growing Meerkat service. Given Meerkat has yet to launch onto Android, we have not spoken about it, but it is highly popular among people who wish to share live video feeds directly through Twitter.
Think of Meerkat and the newer Periscope app like Snapchat, but in real-time, with as many viewers as you want. The Twitter-backed Periscope is basically the same thing as Meerkat, the only difference being that you can archive your live streams for viewers to see later. Meerkat deletes your feeds, the same as Snapchat.
According to both teams for Periscope and Meerkat, Android apps are in the works, but don’t hold your breath. In 2015, where Android holds an enormous share of the smartphone marketshare, it is still treated as a second-rate OS to develop for. Now, of course, Android poses a few more hurdles for developers to tackle when compared to iOS, but still, what the heck, companies? Give us the apps, too!
When either of these apps launch for Android, we will inform you immediately.
