The Nexus 9 is the newest device to receive iFixit’s teardown treatment, resulting in an answer to the age old question, “Can I fix this thing myself?” After peeling the back plate off, carefully removing the 6700mAh battery, dissecting all of its camera, speaker, and vibrator modules, iFixit claims that the Nexus 9 repairs will not exactly be user friendly.
One of the more interesting parts of a teardown is to look at the board which contains the device’s brains. On the Nexus 9, the main workhorse is the 64-bit Tegra K1 processor, followed up by Epida/Micron Technology storage, Samsung Flash memory, Broadcom WiFi module, and a Texas Instruments chip labeled TI47CFP91 T65913B3D9.
Overall, on a score system of 1 to 10, the Nexus 9 received a 3. While the back is easily removed without the need for heat or tools, once you are inside, you are met with a maze of delicate wiring and tape. Long story short, if something happens to your Nexus 9, best to leave the repairs to the professionals.
