Following reports of a rumored acquisition of Twitch that hit the web this weekend, Google has officially acquired Divide (formerly Enterproid), a startup company that specialized in securing Android devices in corporate environments.
Few details were disclosed, but Divide said its team will join Google’s Android division.
Divide, which was backed by Google Ventures and had raised more than $25 million from investors, took a “container approach” to BYOD. Using Divide’s proprietary software, corporate data was separated from personal information on employees’ devices, giving companies remote management capabilities, while allowing owners the freedom to install apps and games.
The purchase of Divide aligns nicely with rumors that Google will emphasis enterprise security in the next version of Android. Back in March, we heard about the possibility of stronger encryption, storage of data on secure chips, and new APIs for managing devices remotely; features which sound right up Divide’s alley.
It might take a while for the acquisition to bear fruit, but rest assured, Google is finally taking enterprise seriously.
