A new report from Korea Times is shedding more light on Samsung’s competitor to Google Glass, which has been dubbed Galaxy Glass by those who are familiar with the company’s plans. According to the recent report, Samsung will look to debut Galaxy Glass at this year’s IFA which takes place annually in Berlin, Germany in September.
From what sources report, Galaxy Glass will be much like Galaxy Gear, as it will display notifications for the user, shoot pictures, control music, place and receive phones calls, plus a lot of other things that Samsung is currently developing.
A recent patent application for the device gave the public a look at what Galaxy Glass could look like, pictured above. It should be taken into account that Samsung and Google both reached a patent cross-licensing agreement, which means Samsung won’t have to fear Google taking legal action against any similarities that Galaxy Glass might have to Google Glass – including the name. With the agreement now in place, both companies state that they would rather focus on innovation, instead of litigation.
An unnamed Samsung official was quoted saying the following.
The new smart glass to be introduced by Samsung is a new concept of wearable device that can lead to an exciting culture of communication. The smart glass will present our aim to lead the new market with proven capability. Wearable devices can’t generate profits immediately. Steady releases of devices are showing our firm commitment as a leader in new markets.
Samsung definitely likes to play the “we were here first” game, but the company will soon realize that beating other companies to certain tech fields isn’t like landing on the moon first. Sure, the Galaxy Gear was a leader in the field, but it came with a string of issues which then had to be fixed with updates over the course of months. We hope that Samsung hasn’t half baked yet another product and rushed it to market.
IFA kicks off in September of 2014.
