Essential Says Its New Device is Now in Early Testing

We’ve been waiting for a new Essential device for a long time and we hardly ever miss a chance to remind you of that fact. In a bit of exciting news, an Essential spokesperson recently provided the following statement to XDA, likely after a follow-up was made concerning a tweet from Andy Rubin in June.

We’ve previously shared that the Essential team is working on a new device. It is now in early testing and we look forward to sharing more details in the future.

While “early testing” could mean anything, it’s certainly something and something is better than nothing.

The last big piece of Essential info that the Android world received was from back in October, 2018, when Bloomberg reported that a new phone was indeed coming from the company. Since then, it’s been very quiet.

This week, though, XDA writes that they have a pretty solid grasp on what to expect from Essential, but it leaves the idea of an Essential Phone 2 in question. According to XDA’s findings, whatever the device is, it may have a horizontal screen orientation, be powered by a Snapdragon 730 processor (or just some Qualcomm processor in general), and may or may not feature cameras. It’s also detailed that the device may not have Google Mobile Services, but does run Android 10.

Honestly, it’s a pretty confusing situation in terms of what this device actually is and what it features, but it’s still pretty early to start nailing down exactly what Essential is doing here.

As always, we’ll keep you posted.
