Verizon said this morning that it is ready to turn on 5G in New York City. Well, parts of New York City will be able to access Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband network on September 26, bringing their total number of cities with 5G to 11.
Verizon didn’t say exactly where in NYC you’d be able to access 5G, though I’d imagine they will do so next week, when they turn on all the towers they’ve put in place. Expect it in parts of Manhattan for sure, but after that it’s anyone’s guess.
As a reminder, Verizon 5G Ultra Wideband is 5G millimeter Wave (mmW), the super fast portion of 5G that isn’t very good at penetrating buildings or windows or making its way around corners. If you have direct line of sight to it, your phone can cook up Gigabit speeds. If you don’t have a direct line of sight, the experience might not be incredible.
September 26!
