Amazon announced the Fire TV Cube this morning, a new Alexa-equipped media box that Amazon hopes will control everyone in your media center. From TVs to soundbars and receivers, the Fire TV Cube connects to all if and lets your voice do the work.
For starters, Fire TV Cube will cost $119.99, but as a promo launch price, you can pre-order one right now for $89.99 (Note: Prime member price). That seems like an insanely good deal for what this little box can do.
What can it do, you ask? One of the big sells here by Amazon is the voice control over other devices. You can turn on your TV, adjust volume on your soundbar or receiver, and control your TV experience from various cable providers. Commands like “Alexa, turn on/off the TV,” or “Alexa, switch to cable,” are some examples. You can find more on the voice interaction here.
Along with all of that voice support, the box is capable of pushing 4K signals at up to 60fps, HDR-10, and Dolby Atmos Audio. Of course, it also has Alexa built-in for control over your smart home, sending messages, listening to music, etc. You know what Alexa can do at this point.
In terms of hardware, the Fire TV Cube has far-field microphones (like Echo units) for voice control across the room, 1.5GHz quad-core processor, 16GB storage, 802.11ac dual-band MIMO WiFi, and ethernet support. It comes with an IR receiver and extender, as well as a voice remote. The back of the unit features a micro USB port, IR port, power port, and the single HDMI port that does all of the heavy lifting between your home media setup.
If interested, you can pre-order at the promo $89.99 price below. The Fire TV Cube ships on June 21.
