The brand new Google News experience that was announced last week at Google I/O is now widely available to just about everyone. If you didn’t sideload the app out of the gate or pick-up the update through Google Play, you can do so now.
To recap, the new Google News is replacing Google Play Newsstand, so if you love that app, you may want to hold off on updating as long as you can. If you don’t care and want the new experience, expect a “cleaner” look, a “smarter” briefing, and a 360-degree view of big news stories that includes stories from multiple outlets, social media, and YouTube.
As someone who used Newsstand all of twice, I can tell you that I’ve been using Google News pretty regularly since updating to it. It does a pretty fantastic job of showing me the news I actually care about, the UI is really nice, and I do appreciate the “Full coverage” option to see all of the different angles to a story. I also feel like it’s doing a good job of pinging me with important breaking news stories.
