Android Things Hits 1.0 as Devices From LG, JBL, and Lenovo Ready for Launch

Google’s IoT platform, also known as Android Things, reached v1.0 today ahead of Google I/O. With the launch of Android Things 1.0, we’re now at the point where the platform is ready for production devices, like Smart Displays.

Google said today in a blog post that the Android Things preview, which has been running for months, reached over 100,000 SDK downloads and 10,000 developers. It also now supports System-on-Modules (SoMs) based on the NXP i.MX8M, Qualcomm SDA212, Qualcomm SDA624, and MediaTek MT8516 (some pictured above).

For those not familiar with Android Things and the IoT world, just know that this platform “does the heavy lifting with certified hardware, rich developer APIs, and secure managed software updates using Google’s back-end infrastructure,” to help device makers focus on building amazing products, not the other stuff. It also supports Google technologies like Google Assistant and Google Cast.

And speaking of devices, now that Android Things 1.0 is here, we should start to see devices powered by it hit store shelves. Think about the Smart Displays that were shown off at CES earlier this year. These are the Amazon Echo Show-like devices from LG, JBL, and Lenovo that all sport Google Assistant. We aren’t expecting them until this summer, but we could always see a shifting timeline now that Android Things is at 1.0.
