Official: Here’s the OnePlus 6 Top Notch

OnePlus 6 Top Notch

With everyone sharing the hottest of takes concerning top notches lately, OnePlus has reached out to The Verge exclusively, letting everyone on the internet know that its next smartphone, presumably called the OnePlus 6, will definitely have a top notch and we’ll all just have to deal with it.

According to OnePlus’ Carl Pei, the top notch is the company’s way of providing more screen real estate to buyers. That’s, like, the main reasoning behind it.

What you are essentially doing is moving the entire notification bar up, giving users more content on their screen.

To go along with the top notch, OnePlus is also going to incorporate its gestures, which have already been in testing and showcased by us in a recent video. Interesting, Pei doesn’t shy away from the fact that without the iPhone X, a lot of what OnePlus is implementing wouldn’t be happening.

We saw the implementation [of gestures] on the iPhone. Maybe it would have taken longer if Apple hadn’t done it. Maybe not as fast. But we have access to the roadmaps of all the screen manufacturers, and when they gave us the opportunity to make cutouts at the top of the screen, it just made sense.

Pei’s discussion also goes into top notches and their relation to bottom chins. On the iPhone X, the phone’s OLED display curves internally to allow for it to connect to the logic board on the backside. This solution is apparently quite expensive, and due to that fact, no Android OEM has attempted it. Not even Samsung who produces the displays for the iPhone X has opted for ditching the bottom chin, but as we all know, the Galaxy S9 and S9+ doesn’t have a top notch.

Whether you’re feeling the top notch or hating on the top notch, Carl Pei has some parting words for you.

It’s a very clear decision: more real estate for the user. In conclusion, learn to love the notch.

We expect the OnePlus 6 to be announced in the near future.
