Announced in coordination with Plex’s unveiling of Live TV and DVR functionality, SHIELD TV owners should be on the lookout for Experience Upgrade 5.2 over the coming weeks.
Said to rollout to those enrolled in the SHIELD Preview Program first, Upgrade 5.2 brings true support for those who want to cut the cord. To sum up the possibilities, all a user will need is a HD tuner hooked up via USB to their SHIELD TV or a tuner connected to their network. If you already have one, and have a Plex Pass, you can start watching OTA TV, but also DVR that TV directly through Plex on SHIELD TV. With regard to Plex and its users, this is huge news.
To allow for all of this on SHIELD TV, the update essentially brings two new features: Ability to write to network storage (allowing customers to record TV shows and movies directly to their network attached storage (NAS) via Plex) and support for USB tuners.
To celebrate this update, NVIDIA is offering new SHIELD TV buyers a six month subscription to Plex Pass, a $25 value. You will obviously need a tuner, too, but this subscription will allow you to start the Live TV and DVR functionality.
Considering how much of this SHIELD TV updates revolves around the Plex announcement, below is the video that details the service from Plex.
SHIELD TV owners, get that update.
