Today, Nest will push a new app update to Android and iOS that should improve the notification experience from your cameras. It’ll also add app shortcuts on Android, for those running Android 7.1 Nougat.
As Nest notes in its blog post about the new app update, some times you don’t want notifications for everything. To help cut down on unwanted notifications, Nest Aware (the paid service of Nest cameras) will be able to automatically detect doors and create activity zones around them. That means you’ll only get motion notifications when something happens with that zone or doorway.
Additionally, if you are running Android 7.0 and higher, Nest says that as your Nest Cam notices activity (and you are subscribed to Nest Aware), your notification will show an animated preview of the action, so that you may not even need to enter the app to check on it. For Nest Protect owners, Nest is also introducing a warning for carbon monoxide that automatically pops up live video from all of the Nest Cams in your house.
And finally, when long-pressing Nest app on Android 7.1+, you’ll have access to app shortcuts for cameras and other Nest products. If you want, you can drag those to your home screen for quick shortcuts, or just access them each time with a long-press on the icon.
