Last week, ASUS admitted during an investor call that internally, they had tossed around the idea of trying to acquire HTC. That’s it, though, they just threw out the idea at a board meeting or something before moving on to other matters. They even followed up the brief mention of an acquisition by saying that they were unlikely to even attempt such a thing, because they aren’t interested in buying companies on their deathbeds like to grow organically.
We thought the story was done there because it’s almost a non-story, but HTC decided that it needed to make a bold statement on the matter. HTC said that it “has not made any contact with Asus regarding this matter, and it will not consider a merger with Asus.” OK! They continued with, “As an international brand, HTC will continue to design world-class innovative smart devices through its pursuit of brilliance brand promise.”
There, you see, HTC isn’t interested in your ASUS acquisition chatter.
On a related note, HTC’s stock rose by 10% following all of that acquisition chatter.
