Report: Samsung in Talks to Buy BlackBerry for Up to $7.5 Billion

According to sources of Reuters, who had eyes on with the paperwork, Samsung is currently in negotiations to purchase BlackBerry outright. With a high premium on BB’s current trading price, Samsung could spend anywhere from $6 billion to $7.5 billion to acquire BlackBerry’s valuable patent portfolio.

The meetings between executives to discuss a transaction began last week, but as of right now, there is no word from either company regarding the process. As it stands, in late 2013, BlackBerry’s patents based on encryption and other miscellaneous IT were valued at roughly $2.25 billion.

While we are now in early 2015, not much has changed for BlackBerry. The company’s smartphone sector has still been touting its secure network for users, essentially keeping it alive for those people who need high security on their info.

With Samsung and the continued push of KNOX, its enterprise-level security platform, a hit of up to $7.5 billion for encryption patents could prove valuable in the longterm.

When and if official word comes, we will keep you updated.
