Google, facing mounting pressure from Dropbox, Microsoft, and Apple, is seeking ways to make its cloud storage solutions more appealing. The search giant focused on enterprise needs earlier this year, but pivoted its attention today towards students with the announcement of Drive for Education.
Billed as a “free bookbag for the 21st century,” Drive for Education features a truly unlimited amount of storage. Yep, you read that right – unlimited storage. Plus, individual files up to 5TB in size are supported, which should make transferring centillion-page term papers a breeze. Enhanced auditing with file activity tracking is also coming, plus Google Apps Vault, a tool that facilitates compliance with any data retention laws that might apply to public institutions.
Google says all Google Apps for Education customers can expect the enhancements “soon.” No ETA more specific than that, unfortunately.
