During an Intel developer conference in San Francisco this week, Intel showed off an upcoming Dell tablet, the Venue 8 7840. From the devices we have seen from Dell in the past, we get the sense that the company was going to only focus on entry-level Android slates, shipping them with low resolution displays and older versions of Android on board. Now, with the Venue 8 7840, it appears that Dell might take a shot at the top-tier tablets on the market.
Gizmodo went hands-on with the upcoming tablet, which features a 8.4″ (2560 x 1600) OLED panel, Intel Atom Z3580 quad-core processor clocked at 2.3GHz, 8MP rear-facing camera with a few tricks up its sleeve, measures in at only 6.4mm thin, and runs Android 4.4+.
As for the camera tricks I mentioned, Dell and Intel have placed three cameras on the tablet, allowing it to triangulate distance of objects as well as take measurements inside of photos. For example, if you need to find out the dimensions of your Ferrari (photographed below), you can do so with Dell’s upcoming tablet.
On top of triangulation, the cameras are able to perform Lytro-like tricks, which allows users to go back into their gallery after a photo is taken, and then refocus to any point in a picture. Photography on a tablet is usually mocked here in the US, but given that this tablet is capable of performing a few cool tricks, people won’t be able to judge you.
The tablet won’t be available until late this year, but if you are interested, be prepared for a price tag that justifies these specs.
