Report: HTC Cancels Plans for Smartwatch

According to a new report from Pocket-Lint, HTC has canceled development of its smartwatch, images of which may have leaked a few weeks ago in a promotional video.

Rising costs associated in creating the device played a part, the publication reports, as did a failure to sufficiently differentiate the watch from the competition.

Rumors suggested that the smartwatch was a remodeled Qualcomm Toq running a custom UI. It’s possible that the Mirasol display, a technology that uses colored e-ink, proved too cost-prohibitive to mass produce affordably.

An alternative explanation? The competition. The Moto 360 has seen an unprecedented level of demand, while Apple is widely expected to unveil a smartwatch of its own next week.

All things considered, HTC’s R&D money is probably better spent elsewhere, at least for the time being.

Saddened by this news at all?
