Google News and Weather App Gets Random, Massive Overhaul

Google News and Weather, remember that app? No? Don’t get down on yourself if you know nothing of this app, a news and weather distributor that was a part of the stock Android experience, yet hasn’t seen an update in years. Today, though, it has risen from the dead with a massive update from Google.

The update turns News and Weather into a modern app, with slideout navigation and a fair amount of Material Design stylings.

Once installed (or updated), you will find a minimal app that resembles both Google Now and Google’s desktop news site. There is plenty of white and grey, but you get the card-like, sectioned experience to see separation between weather and various news topics. You can expand items like the weather box to see more info (for multiple cities), swipe between pages to get to new topics, and add personalization by signing in with your Google account (or multiple accounts).

By all means, this is a great update.

Some on our team are seeing the app available, while others aren’t. If you aren’t able to see it yet, feel free to grab the .apk file from below.
