As if there were not enough already, LG and Motorola are not the only companies with plans to release circle-shaped smartwatches. The SIM-enabled Gear 2 Solo, expected to debut alongside the Galaxy Note 4 at next week’s Unpacked, will retain the conventional geometry of its predecessors, but Samsung’s newest, unannounced Gear – a model reportedly under development – is reportedly circular, according to a SamMobile source familiar with the company’s plans.
Although virtually everything about the device is seemingly in flux, SamMobile’s source was unable to confirm the smartwatch’s release date or even operating system, but news of Samsung designing circular compliment to its existing Gear line wouldn’t come as a huge surprise.
Anecdotally, the Moto 360 is the year’s most anticipated smartwatch, largely in part to its premium materials and deferential design. In a few months’ time, Samsung may attempt to replicate Motorola’s putative success with a circular wristwatch of its own.
