Having an already busy day on Monday with the unveiling of the Galaxy S5, Samsung is keeping the ball rolling this week, announcing two new mobile processors for smartphones and tablets, the Exynos 5 Octa (5422) and Exynos 5 Hexa.
The Octa 5422 is a somewhat mild update to the already existing Exynos 5 Octa (5420) processor (seen in the European Galaxy Note 3), with both clusters of chips receiving a bump in max clock speed to 1.5GHz and 2.1GHz. Other than speed bump, it features the same GPU as the previous Octa, but does come with updated software.
Samsung states that the revised Octa is better suited for devices with higher resolution displays, such as WQHD (2560 x 1440) and WQXGA (2560 x 1600).
The Exynos 5 Hexa is a six-core big.LITTLE HMP SoC, powered by two 1.7GHz ARM Cortex-A15 cores and four 1.3GHz ARM Cortex-A7 cores. Samsung claims that the Hexa will be able to pump out serious power, while also saving devices from excessive battery drain.
Along with Exynos 5 Octa products, it adopts big.LITTLE HMP to provide the right mixture of cores for various tasks, resulting in up to 42 percent improved performance when compared with the previous Exynos 5 Dual products.
Unfortunately, there is no timeframe given from Samsung as to when we might see either of these chips hit the market, but our guess would be first half of 2014. Once MWC settles down, you can expect to hear more about all of the announcements made from Samsung and other companies.
