The newly-unveiled Galaxy S5 smartphone from Samsung is the world’s first to feature a full blown heart rate monitor, but definitely not the first with a fingerprint scanner. We were live at Samsung’s NYC Unpacked satellite event today, and were able to score hands-on time with the device. Since the heart rate monitor and fingerprint scanner are two big focal points for the device, we figured we would give them a quick whirl for all of you to see.
Since the fingerprint scanner on the demo device was set up to someone else’s fingerprint, we weren’t really able to show off how accurate the scanner is. From viewing others use it, it seems as if the scanner should work fine with no real hiccups. We will have to wait until we get extended time with the device to try it out for ourselves, though.
As for the heart rate monitor, we did two test runs and each time the reading was very different. The fist read about 160bps and the second was only 75bps. Quite the difference. It could be because these devices are pre-production (according to Samsung’s PR), but we shall see.
