Courtesy of @evleaks (as usual), we are getting what are believed to be the first two looks at Samsung’s next smartwatch(es), though the name(s) may now be up in the air. The pictures certainly represent two smartwatches that look very similar to last year’s Galaxy Gear, and are accompanied by the names Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo. But @evleaks notes that these may not be Galaxy branded in the end, meaning they could be a separate product category for Samsung.
Rumors earlier this week suggested that the new Gear smartwatch from Samsung would run Tizen instead of Android, so potentially by leaving the Galaxy branding behind, that could end up happening. That’s just speculation on my part, of course. It’s tough to tell exactly what the non-Galaxy branding could mean, but maybe Samsung is seeing an opportunity to create a stand-alone brand of wearables.
As far as the watches themselves go, we’ve got two models – the Gear 2 and the Gear 2 Neo. I’d imagine one is the higher end model (Gear 2), while the other would be the entry level choice (Neo). The hardware has changed somewhat from the original Gear, with both watches now showing a physical home button at the bottom and what appear to be two different types of cameras or IR blasters at the top of each.
I’m wondering if one is supposed to be the everyday, class-it-up smartwatch (Gear 2), while the other could be focused on fitness. The device on the left seems to have more metal and a slightly bulkier and high-end design, while the watch on the right may have more rubber.
Thoughts?
