AT&T Will Let You Out of Your Contract After 6 Months, as Long as You Switch to Next and a Mobile Share Value Plan

Still aren’t convinced that T-Mobile has shaken up the wireless industry here in the U.S.? AT&T announced a new early smartphone upgrade program today that will actually help you get out of your AT&T contract and onto a month-to-month wireless package. Seriously, AT&T apparently wants you to get out of your contract, sign up for Next and add-on a Mobile Share Value plan. And they want this, because they want their customers to experience the world “all at a great value.” It sounds so unAT&T-like.

So here is the deal. If you are currently under contract with AT&T – as in you signed a contract before January 18 – you can upgrade to a new device within 6 months and kill off your contract, as long as you upgrade using AT&T Next, plus sign-up for a new Mobile Share Value plan. If you signed a contract after January 19, you are essentially stuck, however, AT&T will let you upgrade within 20 months. To check to see if you are eligible, dial *NEW#.

For those new, AT&T Next is an upgrade plan that allows you to buy phones with $0 down and then pay the phone off over 20 monthly payments. You can learn all there is to know about upgrade plans here. AT&T’s new Mobile Share Value plans are discounted month-to-month plans that run $15 cheaper than their contract plans. Both are responses to T-Mobile’s early upgrade and no-contract moves that were done last year.
