We still have many readers around here who cry that the Moto X is a mid-range device not worthy of its $199 price tag, but Motorola’s plans for an even cheaper Moto X look to still be alive. First mention of this device came from Moto CEO Dennis Woodside when he said it would be on the horizon sometime soon. Nearly a month ago, we got further images and information that showed this device could come with interchangeable back plates. Today, we see the actual device, codenamed “Motorola DVX,” make its way through the FCC.
The FCC filings that were spotted are for a GSM variant of the phone and also a CDMA variant that might be headed to Sprint; or more specifically, Sprint’s prepaid networks. Carriers like Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile and Cricket all use this CDMA network, and Woodside said that this low-priced device would be geared more for prepaid and developing markets. Unfortunately, that is all we learned from the FCC. Usually, when a device passes through this stage, it is not too far off from launching. We could possibly see an announcement and launch sometime before the end of the year.
Is this device interesting? Or is going cheaper than the Moto X a bad call?
