The first batches of Google Glass hardware are rolling “off the production line now,” according to emails sent out to Glass Explorers, the group of Google I/O 2012 attendees who signed up to be the first on the planet to get their hands on Google’s new wearable tech. With early production underway, devices should start shipping at any moment. In the email, Google says that they will not wait until all units are produced before shipping, so they will instead ship in batches as they are produced.
If you signed up as an Explorer, you’ll receive a second email when yours is ready, so that you can fork out the $1,500 asking price and give Google the thumbs-up to ship.
In related news, Google also released a developer portal and API this evening, so that Explorers can start preparing work immediately. The API is called Google Mirror and apps will apparently be called Glassware – cute, right?
After cruising through the dev portal for a few minutes, I went a head and pulled out the five new videos which describe everything from sharing contacts to managing timeline cards to notifications, and included them below. I even found multiple screenshots of the UI itself.
The policies and terms of service introduced with Glass are also worth noting. For example, developers are not allowed to show ads in API clients or charge for them, whatsoever. Google also appears to be checking apps much more thoroughly in Glass, which we would assume is for security reasons.
If Google Glass is going to be a part of your future, I suggest you take a look at the links below. This is the most detail anyone has seen with regard to Google Glass.
