How to: Manually Update DROID X to Android 2.2.1

It looks like an update.zip file has landed on the interwebs for those of you who can’t wait a couple of days for Motorola to make the Android 2.2.1 (system 2.3.340) update go live again for your Droid X phones.  To install this puppy, we use the same process that you would on almost any other Android phone, but there are a couple of things you should be aware of before applying.

First note: If you are running stock non-rooted or rooted system build 2.3.15, then you can apply this update no problem.  You will lose root access, but you can get that back with z4root.  To find out which system build, go to Settings>About Phone.  If you have modified any of the bloatware files though, you will be out of luck.  You need to have a clean system file.

Second note: If you are running a system build that is different from 2.3.15, you may not want to apply this.  The DX and Blur are finicky monsters and you could run into issues.

Third note:  If you are running the 2.2 (2.3.9) leak from the summer, these instructions to get you back to 2.1 are still available.  After that you will need to pull the 2.2 (2.3.15) update before going to 2.2.1.

Fourthnote: If you are running the 2.2.1 (2.3.320) leak, I would avoid applying this as well.  There will be a fix for you in the next day or two.

Fifthnote: I have not applied this file, but have heard from users who have successfully.  My 2.3.340 update came another way.

Sixth note:  As always, you do this at your own risk!  We are simply here providing information and not recommending anything.

Read all of those?  Might want to read them one more time.  Instructions after the break.

Instructions:

1.  Download this file to the root of your SD card:  update.zip (alt link)
2.  Do not unzip or rename the file.
3.  With the update.zip file on your SD card and not in a folder, power off your phone.
4.  Boot into recovery by holding down “Home” and then “Power” until you see an exclamation mark.
5.  Then press the “Search” button and you will enter recovery.
6.  Using the volume keys, highlight “apply update.zip” and press in the camera button.
7.  The update will now be applied.  Enjoy!

And I have no idea why this update is only 25MB when Verizon pegged it at 79MB.

Cheers 0mie and XDA!
